Making the hobby better for you.

Traditional Miniatures

“Traditional miniatures” — This term is what my eldest son used to gently describe what many today would call ‘old style’ figures. I hold that the scale creep that we are seeing has pushed some very nice figures out. I have many of these in my collection of over 20,000 painted figures. Traditional miniatures are true 25mm and 15mm.

Though Outland Games offers figures in the newer style of the “scale creep” we still keep to much of the original scaling. Traditional miniatures are from the 1960’s and 70’s, so that means manufacturers such as Jack Scruby, Der Kriegspielers, Heritage, Ral Partha, Minifigs and so on. I have many of these in my personal collection, with many others I have painted for sale-offered at shows we will be attending.

3D Printing

3d printing offers a completely new dimension to the hobby. In the efforts to enforce my motto of, “Make the hobby better for you”, the models I design models with the intent to have them available for download so you can print them yourself. My current focuses are on: Modular Castles and Siege Equipment, Roman border walls and forts, cottages and houses, Mechs in various scales, terrain, equipment and accessories for the tabletop, you name it. As someone who simply enjoys making things, 3d modeling and printing offers so much.

Now, if you don’t have a printer or are simply prone to not wanting to tinker with a printer of your own. I understand how these machines require a lot of attention (having burned out my first 3d printer, myself), but you want some of our items, you can get them via mail order or directly from me at a show. We will put up the show information here as soon as we settle on the show schedules. For now we are attending “Advance the Colors”(HMGS/GL), Historicon, and Cincycon. So, drop by and say hello. On top of that, we even as we will also run various games at these shows, free for those interested to play.

Wargame Rulesets

If you were to ask any wargamer, in particular miniatures gamer what they thin about rules sets you would get just tons of information-based on THEIR opinion. I have an opinion on rules sets, too, but I bet this does not fit into what others may think. I hold that rules are merely a thesis on a particular aspect of human competition. This includes warfare, of course, but there are a large number of rules that are not connected to warfare. For example, there are rules on car racing, or space travel, or even animal husbandry.

Still, with me, a big focus with wargame rules has been replicating some aspect of warfare. Keep in mind, anyone writing rules MUST confront the dilemma of realism versus playability. Further a rules author has to bear in mind that rules can drown in details. Rules writers have to commit to their thesis. For instance, should the rules focus on Command and Control at the Corps level? Should the rules place a player in the position of a Union regimental commander on the ground? What does the author want to have players do

About Me

I have been a dedicated wargamer since I was 14 years old-over 50 years ago. Back then we had only a very sparse selection of figures, rules, and games. I started Napoleonic gaming with Frappe and Empire, both long overcome by far more playable rules we see today. I have designed and developed many wargames for miniatures, board games, and real-world simulations.

Yet, having been at this hobby for so many years I have come to realize that through this hobby of wargaming I learned a number of skills by mere osmosis. I learned statistical analysis, probabilities, basic physics, and a host of historical data.

This hobby, with my main focus on the historical part, has been a big driver for continuous reading and research.

I don’t discount fantasy figures, as these offer truly rewarding painting opportunities. I just find historical more to my taste. That being said, if anyone likes a particular aspect of the hobby, say spaceships or racoon racing-so be it, by all means enjoy the hobby. I intend on passing on this passion and excitement to others. I am dedicated to making our hobby better in many ways. Outland Games has a number of team members
who look forward to interesting discourse and helping you in many other ways.

We will be offering ‘figures, rules, advice, painting tutorials, and more. We are planning on attending a number of shows throughout the year, so come join in one or the other game we will host!
